Tuesday Smoothie

This morning’s smoothie consists of blueberries, a banana, baby spinach leaves, whey protein, and a little bit of 1% milk to help smooth things out. VERY good to drink, contrary to the color (like a chocolate purple color). Refreshing and filling while very good for me.

Blueberries have lots of antioxidant pigments that help prevent cancer cells from developing as well as Alzheimer’s, reduce inflammation, and slow other conditions of aging. For those affected, they are also great for urinary tract infections, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and can aid with heart disease.

Bananas are good for preventing colorectal cancer and in women, breast cancer. They are high in vitamin B6, C, and potassium, which helps the body replenish electrolytes.

Spinach is extremely rich in antioxidants and are an excellent source of iron and calcium.

Whey protein digests very quickly so it becomes available for muscle replenishment and building. It helps increase amino acid levels in blood and helps blood flow smoothly. The amino acids in whey assist in reducing the risk of heart disease and cancer.

The Best Breakfasts

As many of you know, I’ve been getting back on track to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Several weeks ago my friend Lee came to stay for a week. In the mornings, he would fix a smoothie for breakfast and I was shocked at how long they curbed my appetite. Frozen berries, a banana, some whey protein, spinach, almond butter, etc. We would have one at 8am and I wouldn’t get hungry for lunch until noon or after.

That led to me going to Barnes & Noble to purchase a book on juicing. Two days later I spent $50 at the grocery on different fruits and vegetables. I will post some of the recipes over the next few months so you can try for yourself. The book is amazing – it has different juicing recipes for different ailments (stress, blood pressure, Alzheimer’s, etc.) and I’ve found many of them to work well.

And I’m back in my home gym after a three month sabbatical. Let me just say, it’s quite disheartening when I had to pull 30lbs off the bench press from what I was doing months ago. Ah well, that’s more of an incentive to push harder (pun intended).
